Everyone wants to live in a nice, clean and organised home but very few people enjoy the daily chores required to keep it this way… Unfortunately, whether you have a domestic worker or use a Professional Cleaning Service regularly or not, there is always a certain amount of daily cleaning which will inevitably need to be done.
Whether it’s washing the last of the dishes or sweeping the floor (again) after your little ones have come running in from playing outside, cleaning tasks are just part of daily life that need to be done – even if we procrastinate them until the last possible moment!
Though everyone has their own list of cleaning chores which they absolutely loathe having to do (ironing comes to mind…), there are a few tasks which tend to get left until they really can’t be left any longer which make the top of the list of ‘most disliked cleaning tasks’ for the majority of people.
What are 4 of the Most Disliked Cleaning Tasks & How to Make Them Easier?
Degreasing the Oven
Unless you are fanatical about your oven and diligently clean it after every use, baked-in and burnt-on grease is inevitable in the oven. From splatters caused by bubbling cheese to cake-mix spills from a bump when placing the tray in the oven, various messes can quickly become hard marks and stains through the dry heat caused through baking. Most oven cleaners are made from harsh chemicals which cause noxious fumes one has to endure in order to get your oven beautifully clean again which adds to this chore being one of the most disliked.
For an easier, and simpler solution to the arduous chore of degreasing your oven, use a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water and generously coated over the inside and leave it overnight. The alkali from the bicarb breaks down grease, and you can easily wipe it away the next day with a damp cloth. No time for an overnight soak? An alternate option is to squeeze the juice of 2 fresh lemons into an oven-safe dish of water and bake it for +/- 20 minutes on a low setting. The steam from the citrus water will loosen tough grease allowing you to wipe down the inside of your oven easily.
Cleaning Tile Grout
Moisture, mold, mildew, soap scum and general grime and dirt can quite quickly leave your tile grout looking dirty and stained. This, in turn, can ruin the overall look of your tiled floor or walls. Scrubbing tile grouting clean is tedious work which can also be hard on the back and knees making it earning it a spot on the most disliked cleaning tasks and is often left until dark stains and marks can no longer be ignored!
To make it easier, mix two parts bicarbonate of soda with one part hydrogen peroxide and apply it along the grout lines (an old toothbrush works great for this!). Leave the solution to for 5 – 10 minutes before gently scrubbing with a standard cleaning brush. Rinse with water and enjoy your beautifully cleaned tile grout. You can also use equal parts baking soda and warm water with a few drops of dish soap if you prefer a simpler mixture or are cleaning sensitive surfaces.
Washing Windows
It’s easy to see why washing windows makes the list of most disliked household chores which is why they are often left until they seem almost ‘cloudy’ from the dust build-up… Not only is this a time-consuming task, but it can also be incredibly frustrating trying to get the windows looking wonderfully clear and streak free!
To easily get crystal-clear results, use a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water with just one drop of dish soap (this is important as too much soap will leave a hazy film). Spray the solution onto your windows and wipe with a flat-weave microfiber cloth or a rubber squeegee working from top to bottom. These work better than paper towelling or newspaper which tend to leave tiny paper-lint fibres behind. It is also best to wash your windows on a cloudy day as direct sunlight heats the glass and dries the liquid too fast, leaving stubborn soap / mineral streaks.
Dusting High Spaces
Dust collects everywhere and keeping it at bay can seem never-ending at times! During dryer months, it can feel like you could spend the whole day dusting shelves, ornaments, picture frames and wiping down tables and vases and still not manage to get it all properly cleaned! Add the awkward angles, neck and arm strain and inconvenience of having to lug around a step ladder just to reach and it’s no wonder dusting high spaces makes the list of most disliked cleaning tasks!
To make this physically taxing task a little easier, use a slightly dampened extendable microfibre duster. The often-bendable microfibre head makes it easy to reach those awkward angles, such as trying to clean ceiling-fan blades or the top of window pelmets, while the slight dampening ensures that dust clings to the pad easily. If you don’t have an extendable duster, attached your dampened duster to the end of a broom handle using elastic bands for a simple ‘DIY’ extension pole.
