Life gets busy. Work, family responsibilities, social commitments and obligations often leave little time for relaxation, let alone anything else! Adding the additional task of deep cleaning your home this Spring can feel like more than one can manage and leave you feeling totally unmotivated…
Though Spring Cleaning is traditionally thought of as a frenzied activity, tackling room for room decluttering, moving furniture around and cleaning all those neglected nooks and crannies – often sacrificing your weekend and leaving you feeling exhausted – there are other options to get the job done!
How to Tackle Deep Spring Cleaning when you’re Feeling Unmotivated
Assess Each Room First
When even the thought of Spring Cleaning leaves you feeling drained and exhausted but you know you have to get it done, start by assessing each room first.
Get out a small notebook or notepad and make a comprehensive ‘To Do’ list for each room in your home. List everything you want to get done from simple tasks like picking up toys left lying under furniture and dusting shelves to basic revamping like re-painting the walls or ceiling.
Under your ‘To Do’ list write a short note on how your family uses this space because rooms aren’t always only used for their intended purposes! Then take a moment to think of simple solutions you could put in place that will help simplify keeping the space clean and tidy for the year ahead, such as placing a bucket in a corner to quickly pick up toys left lying in the lounge which can then be packed away properly once a week. These solutions should be specific to your family’s needs based on daily home-life.
Tackle One Room at a Time
Once your lists are made for each room, choose just one room to tackle first. If you’re feeling highly unmotivated to get things done, then start with the room which needs the least attention. This will help build motivation and entheusiasm once the room is spruced up the way you want it to be through a sense of accomplishment and feeling good about being in that space!
Ditch the Frenzied Activity!
Spring Cleaning, when done thoroughly, is an arduous task and one that can feel particularly overwhelming when youre feeling unmotivated… However, there is no rule that says this type of deep and thorough cleaning has to be completed in a single weekend!
Instead, complete just 2 tasks a day from the list for the room you are focusing on. If you feel like you can do more, then tackle the next task in your list. Often times taking it slow and just getting things done is more effective than trying to complete everything in one go. The momentum builds with small actions adding up to big results. If you keep working through your list, your home will be beautifully clean by the time Summer starts!
