HELPFUL HACK TO BANISH FLIES FROM YOUR BIN THIS SUMMER!

The summer is in full bloom and as much as we enjoy the wonderfully warm weather spent pool-side soaking up the sunshine, the warmer weather also brings with it pesky pests! From mosquitoes to cockroaches, the summer offers seemingly no end to irritating insects set out to invade our homes and ruin our sunshine filled days.

One of the worst of these bugs to have to deal with are flies! These persistent pests feed on decomposing organic waste making your bin – whether in the kitchen or the backyard – a very attractive feeding ground… Flies can detect smells from long distances using special antennae, making pungent odours alluring for their nursery and feast which is all the more irresistible in the summer when moisture and heat speed up decomposition!

Fortunately, there is a simple way you can help prevent flies (and maggots) from making your bin their next breeding ground without having to use harsh chemicals and you probably have the items you need in your cupboard already!

Try this Helpful Hack to Banish Flies from your Bin!

Since flies use their strong sense of smell to find their next feast, the simplest way to keep banish them from your bin is to disrupt their olfactory system.
This can be done using two simple ingredients – cinnamon and cayenne pepper!

How Cinnamon Keep Flies at Bay

Cinnamon easily masks odours coming from your bin with its warm, sweet scent that humans find appealing. Flies, however, find the scent to be overpowering and disruptive making your once-appealing bin unattractive. Furthermore, cinnamon has natural antifungal properties which will help prevent mold / mildew growth! Simply sprinkle this spice in the bottom of your bin, making sure the bin is clean and dry first, to keep these pests away!

How Cayenne Pepper Keep Flies Away

Cayenne Pepper contains capsaicin which creates a strong, irritating scent and sensation that disrupts flies’ senses, forcing them to avoid the area. This spicy powder also irritates flies on contact – whether on their legs, antennae, or mouthparts, which further makes it a natural repellent.

Sprinkle a little of this spice in your bin, along with the cinnamon, to naturally banish flies from your bin! For added sprinkle a little on the edges or lid of your bin as well!

When to Use Cinnamon & Cayenne Pepper in your Bin?

For effective results, these two common household spices should be sprinkled in the bottom of your bins each time you change your trash bag.

For best results, rinse your bin and thoroughly dry the base first before adding your spicy concoction to the bottom. Wrapping strong smelling food scraps in newspaper or sealing in throw-away containers first will also help to prevent these odours from attracting pesky pests and further enhance your bug banishing this summer.

Give this Helpful Hack a try this summer and enjoy the wonderful weather with one less pesky pest trying to annoy you and your family!
