We use our bathrooms daily to clean and preen ourselves, but often overlook the daily build up of messes and grime that come from this frequent use. Even when the bathroom looks clean, hidden grime and bacteria can lurk in hard-to-reach areas! From steam collecting on walls and tiles to soap residue and stains; the bathroom can quickly become a hub for germs, bacteria, mold and mildew which thrive in this humid environment becoming a health hazard…
Daily general cleaning is necessary to keep excess build up at bay, but deep cleaning your bathroom every one to two weeks – depending on the number of residents – is a ‘must’ to ensure your everyone’s health and safety against illness causing germs, skin irritations from residue build up or allergens and respiratory issues from hidden mold and mildew!
The good news is that deep cleaning your bathroom needn’t be a daunting task and with a few pro tips, your bathroom can be sparkling again in no time! Remember to wear the right protective gear and follow instructions and precautions on cleaning agents carefully.
Our Pro Tips to Deep Clean your Bathroom
1. Empty The Room
Take everything out of your bathroom – from towels hanging on rails to everything on your countertops or in your shower. Emptying the bathroom allows you to see your space clearly, including all the nooks and crannies usually hidden by other items.
2. Dust & Sweep / Vacuum
Work from the top down, dusting high shelves and vents so fallen dust / debris can be swept up later. Don’t forget light fixtures. Work your way down and then sweep / vacuum the floors.
3. Wash the Walls & Ceiling
Using an all-purpose cleaner, wipe down the bathroom walls with a microfibre cloth and clean microfibre mop for those high to reach places. Check carefully for residue build-up around showers, bathtubs and sinks and signs of mildew / mold in corners or in tile grout if your walls are tiled. Don’t forget to wipe down the bathroom door!
4. Clean Shelving, Mirrors & Countertops
Use an appropriate all-purpose cleaner and microfibre cloth to wipe down all shelves, railings and countertops, checking carefully for any signs of mold / mildew in corners etc. Stubborn mold / mildew might require additional scrubbing or using mold remover. Wash your mirror with glass / window cleaner, wiping until it is streak-free.
5. Sparkle that Sink & Bathtub
Not all bathroom sinks need the same type of cleaning so be sure to not use harsh chemicals on marble or natural stone sinks! Use an appropriate disinfectant cleaner to and thoroughly wash your sink, leaving the cleaning agent to stand for a few minutes after so the disinfectant has time to work. Scrub any stained areas – like around the tap – with a soft bristled brush, then wipe your sink with clean water. Pour a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar down your drain and let stand for 15 minutes before flushing with warm water to ensure your drain is properly cleaned as well.
6. Get the Toilet Gleaming
Germs linger in the toilet bowl even after flushing, which can fly into the air and land on the seat, the handle, and other surfaces with each flush… First, flush the toilet to clear the bowl and use the toilet brush to remove any visible debris or stains. Apply a toilet cleaning agent under the rim and in the bowl and let stand for a few minutes. While waiting, wipe down the exterior of the toilet with an all-purpose cleaning agent and microfibre cloth, paying attention to any areas showing signs of residue and mildew build-up. Scrub your toilet bowl again now that the cleaning agent has had time to work and flush a final time.
7. Clean the Shower
First, apply white vinegar or specialist cleaner to your showerhead making sure to thoroughly coat it in order to remove any bacteria. Next, remove your shower curtain to be washed or wipe down your shower doors with glass / window cleaner. Then wipe down all tiles etc along the shower walls and flooring with an appropriate all-purpose cleaner, focussing on any signs of mold / mildew growth. Finally, pour bicarbonate of soda and vinegar down the shower drain leaving to stand for a few minutes before flushing with warm water and then wipe the showerhead with warm water and a microfibre cloth.
8. Mop the Floor
Use an appropriate floor cleaning agent for your flooring, mop your bathroom floor from corner to corner. Remember to follow the instructions on your cleaning agent correctly for the best results.
9. The Finishing Touches
Finally, check all the items you removed from the bathroom – clean all items going back into the bathroom, from shampoo bottles to shower curtains and floor mats. Take the time to declutter and sort so all items replaced in your bathroom are useful and wanted!
